Mamie Winkelman-Pearson, compliance officer at Dynamic Advisor Solutions, will celebrate her one- year anniversary at Dynamic in January 2020, possibly clicking her castanets. Prior to joining Dynamic, Mamie contracted with a wealth management firm in Florida as well as nonprofit organizations in Phoenix while completing her Master of Nonprofit Leadership & Management degree from Arizona State University.
With nearly 10 years of experience working in the finance industry, Mamie has served in operations (“aka, signature chaser”) analysis, finance and compliance. Here, she shares her role at Dynamic as her “next career step” and the steps she takes when she’s not pouring over spreadsheets.
Q. What’s your role at Dynamic and how do you help support our clients?
A. My primary role is to review the advertising and marketing pieces for advisors, pull together the initial draft of Compliance training and newsletter articles, and to assist our CCO, Cherie Jolly, in Dynamic’s Compliance testing program. We’re like the Safety department on a construction site. Sometimes we’re viewed as an inconvenient aspect of doing business, but we help ensure the highest level of care is taken regarding each and every aspect of fiduciary duty.
Q. What attracted you to Dynamic, and what compels you to work in a profession servicing wealth managers?
A. After learning about the innovative business structure that Dynamic operates under, I was hooked. The additional opportunity to work fully in Compliance was the next career step that I was interested in pursuing, so a compliance officer was a perfect fit. A portion of my previous jobs were related to compliance, but the firms I worked with were too small to justify it as a fulltime position. Seeing this from an internal position, I fully understand the struggles that firms face shouldering the compliance burden when they would be better served spending that time with clients and prospects. Dynamic offers that kind of support, and I’m thrilled to be part of a much-needed solution the finance sector is currently facing.
Q. Where have you lived prior to moving to the Valley of the Sun?
A. I was born and raised in northern Michigan. Those from the state would know me as a “Yooper.” I have slowly been making my way to warmer climates ever since. My first stop was attending Michigan State University, which may not seem like a warmer climate unless you grew up four hours north of East Lansing. From there, I’ve spent several years just outside of Seattle, Chapel Hill/Durham, N.C., and now happily in the desert since 2014.
Q. What’s your favorite activity or hobby?
A. My favorite activities, outside of pouring over spreadsheets (of course!), include glassblowing and Flamenco dancing. I’m in a little in love with castanets. I also have a minor obsession discussing nonprofit financial health strategies with just about anyone who will dive into it with me.
Q. Who’s your favorite superhero? Why?
A. My favorite superhero is Rogue from X-Men. Part of this is the superficial similarity of going gray via a streak at the very front of my hairline. The slightly deeper reason is that she absorbs the superpowers of those she comes in contact with and redirects them. I feel there is no higher gift than learning from the experiences and methods those around you have developed over time. And then of course, finding the ways to make them your own.
Q. What’s your favorite quote?
A. “My desire for knowledge is intermittent; but my desire to bathe my head in atmospheres unknown to my feet is perennial and constant. The highest we can attain to is not Knowledge, but Sympathy with Intelligence.” -Henry David Thoreau, Walking
Q. How long is your commute to Dynamic?
A. My commute is an amazing 20 steps from my back door to my casita—in the most comfortable work clothes I’ve ever been allowed to work in!
